WHO WE ARE
Mission
POST 84 is a student-led outdoor education organization that cultivates environmental awareness, leadership, self-confidence, and knowledge of the outdoors, through accessible outdoor educational experiences that appeal to high school students.
What “Student-Led” Means to Us
POST is a student-led organization run by high schoolers, for high schoolers.
We believe students are knowledgeable, capable, and have unique and valuable perspectives. At POST, students lead not only to learn and grow personally, but also because student leadership works.
Our unique model means student leaders in our program gain hands-on experience facilitating games, activities, and learning, planning and running a variety of trips, and even overseeing organization-wide operations including gear management, outreach, and fundraising. Student leaders sit on our Community Board alongside adult experts, participate in hiring the adult employees they work with, and help shape the future of the organization.
Who We Are & What We Do
POST 84 is Seattle-area student-led outdoor education organization and 501(c)(3) nonprofit primarily serving public high school students. Our student leaders plan, coordinate, and run over 16 trips throughout the year, bringing over 400 students to scenic locations all over Washington state.
Campers learn to camp, backpack, rock climb, kayak, build shelters, start fires, perform skits, connect with strangers, take care of the land, and more; all through unique peer-to-peer educational experiences facilitated by our close-knit team of over 70 volunteer student leaders.
By providing pay-what-you-can scholarships and free gear rentals to all program participants, we ensure every student is able to access a relationship to the outdoors.
-
70+ Volunteer student “staff” help with outreach and gear before and after trips, facilitate activities, teach skills and ecology lessons, and lead “teams” of campers and help them build relationships throughout the trip experience, growing their own leadership skills and sense of personal confidence & responsibility in the process.
-
Our Student Executive Committee (EC) is a smaller, tighter-knit group of volunteer student leaders holding key roles in our organization that operate throughout the school year. EC members attend weekly meetings and monthly board meetings, where they discuss each trip as a team, strategize ways to support one another, and support organizational needs in order to make our trips possible. Students on EC gain insight into organizational operations and learn a higher level of leadership skills, with direct support from experienced adult mentors.
-
Our Directors are a small team of experienced adult staff who work closely with EC members and other student leaders to support their work, ensure safety throughout our programming, and provide personalized mentorship to students throughout their experience in the program.
-
Our Community Board is made up of parents, community members, and alumni, who work closely with EC to provide support, insight, and mentorship to supports student learning.
